I did not have a summer.
It was out of order,
Death was around me a lot.
In the midst of trying to understand my mother’s death, the passing of an aunt, and family friend this summer… For comfort, I was led to read a small black book with white letters and gold stars on the front cover entitled: The Better Life: Small Things You Can Do Right Where You Are, by Claire Diaz-Ortiz. In this quick read the author’s approach to having a better life shed’s light on her own experiences and choices where she decided to make a small changes, instantaneously. The author’s writing was easy to take in and digest – I kept reading. I felt and now understand that it is okay to be okay with what you are going through, even when life kicks you and keeps kicking you.
Claire Diaz-Ortiz discusses several themes that are useful at any stage in life: Learn to Waste Time Well, Quit Something Every Week, Live Through The Hurt, Find The Peace Around You and Say No. I appreciate when authors tell it like it is, and make it a point to not sound like chatterboxes looking for gratitude. Her world is real. I was glad to be invited in to read about the author’s life has she knows it. The Better Life… is filled with 152 pages of wisdom that allows readers to sit back and examine their own lives in the present moment that they are in without fear.
